Chess Olympiad | India have a mixed day as Women’s win followed by a loss for Men

It was a truly mixed bag for the Indian team at the 43rd Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia, on Thursday as the Women's team’s win was negated by a loss for the Men’s team. The Women’s team won the game 3-1 against Poland while the men succumbed to a 2.5-1.5 loss against top seeds USA.

After a surprise 2-2 draw against Serbia in round 3, India brought Tania Sachdev, who was rested against Serbia, back into the fold. The Indian Grand Master defeated Klaudia Kulon on the third board while D Harika continued winning run with a victory over Jolanta Zawadzka. The team will now taken on Argentina in the next round of the Olympiad.

The Men’s team, led by Viswanathan Anand, went into their fourth-round tie on a high having won all three of their previous matches. But this time they were up against the top seeds, USA.

After P Harikrishna and K Sasikiran settled for draws against Wesley So and Samuel Shankland respectively, it was upto Anand to hand Indian the initiative. However, playing with black, the Indian legend struggled to deal with the Catalan variation by Fabiano Caruana and conceded the game in 26 moves. The hopes of a comeback were quickly shattered as Vidit Gujarathi also settled for a draw. The Men will now face Paraguay in Round 5 of the event.
