The Chess World Cup, being held in Khanty Mansiysk of Russia would be seeing the Indian likes of P Harikrishna, Vidit Gujrathi, B Adhiban, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, P Sethuraman, SL Narayanan, Abhijeet Gupta, Karthikeyan Murali, Nihal Sarin and Aravindh Chithambaram competing to go as far as possible. Anand, however, would be taking part in the Grand Swiss meet instead.
India had a horrible campaign in the World Cup when they participated last time with all the seven players failing to go beyond the third round. However, India would be more prepared this time and they have as many a better initiative with the qualification of Candidates Cup also at stake.
The finalists from the World Cup would get to play the top layer, including current world champion Magnus Carlsen, in the World Chess Championship in November 2020. After hosts Russia, India would be seeing the most number of players at the Chess World Cup.
