Lungi Ngidi, Khayelihle Zondo receive ODI call up for India series

Lungi Ngidi has managed to impress the selectors in the Test series who have shown their faith in him by giving him a maiden call-up for the upcoming ODI series. Apart from Ngidi, Khayelihle Zondo has also been added to the 15-man squad that South Africa announced for the first three ODIs.

After the end of the three-match Test series, India and South Africa will face each other in a six-match ODI series. Ngidi made his debut against India in the Centurion Test where he grabbed seven wickets including 6/39 in the second innings. While Zondo was included in the squad in 2015 when the team visited India, he failed to get a single game.

After missing the previous ODI series because of the injury, Chris Morris and Morne Morkel have been included in the ODI side along with the likes of Andile Phehlukwayo and Kagiso Rabada. Tabraiz Shamsi has also joined the team as the option of the second spinner.

"This is a continuation of vision 2019 as we develop our squad for the 2019 ICC World Cup in England. Lungi has achieved a remarkable double in being named Man of the Match on both his T20 and Test match debuts and he now gets the chance to show what he can do in the 50 overs format, Linda Zondi, CSA National Selection Panel Convener, said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

"Khaya has been on the fringes of selection for some time now and was included in the South Africa A side in their recent 50 overs campaign against the England Lions. He forms part of our vision to give opportunities to fringe players and we will continue this policy throughout the build-up to the World Cup.

"It is good to have both Morne and Chris back in the squad as the 2019 World Cup is little more than a year away now," concluded Zondi.

Quinton de Kock will perform his duty behind the wickets under Faf du Plessis' captaincy and JP Duminy and Aiden Markram also earned a spot in the side after their recent domestic performances.

Squad for first-three ODIs: Faf du Plessis (c), Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Lungisani Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Khayelihle Zondo
