Tilak Varma was bought by Mumbai Indians at the Indian Premier League's mega auction that took place in February 2022. The young batter was signed for INR 1.70 crore at a time when many did not know much about him. In his second game for Mumbai Indians, the 19-year-old left-handed batter impressed many former cricketers as well as fans as he put on a splendid show with the bat against Rajasthan Royals. Varma scored 61 from 33 balls which included 3 fours and 5 sixes and a staggering strike rate of 184.84.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was impressed with the young left-hander's performance. In a chat with ESPNCricinfo, Shastri said, “I like his temperament very much. He wasn't scared of the big names".
Ravi Shastri added, “He was very calm and composed and has an all-round game with great shots; especially in front of the wicket and the sweep. He used the pace really well too. This is a good omen for Mumbai Indians because Suryakumar Yadav is not in the side and they are missing him very much.”
He also elaborated on why Suryakumar Yadav holds the key to MI's middle order and said, “They need strength and stability in the middle order and that will come only when Suryakumar Yadav returns. So, the innings he played today will benefit Tilak a lot as the tournament proceeds”.
