IPL 2024 | Twitter abuzz as seething Kohli rages with umpire over controversial no-ball dismissal

Umpiring is always a key part of a cricketing contest and has often been subjected to controversial moments in cricket’s history. On Sunday’s afternoon game between KKR and RCB at the Eden Gardens, an animated Virat Kohli was seen fuming over a controversial dismissal that could’ve been a no-ball.

Despite putting to bat first after losing the toss, KKR managed to stockpile 222 runs in 20 overs, courtesy of a swashbuckling start by Phil Salt, followed by Shreyas Iyer’s half-century. In response, RCB looked on track in the first couple of overs in the chase before a Harshit Rana slower one around Kohli’s waist became the talk of the town.

On the first ball of the third over, Harshit Rana came over the wicket and bowled a slower full-toss that seemed to dip into Kohli. The former RCB skipper was stunned by the sudden slowness of the ball in the air and seemed to push too far ahead at the delivery, getting the outside edge towards the left of the bowler. Rana sprinted towards his left at the looped-up rebounding ball and grasped it before the on-field umpire signalled it out.

Thinking it to be a no-ball, Kohli summoned the TV umpire Michael Gough for a final verdict, and to his surprise, the decision remained the same. With the latest update in the usage of DRS in IPL, the smart system revealed that the trajectory of the ball was just below the waist as per the standard measurement of Kohli and it should be a fair delivery. However, unprecedented scenes unfurled in the field as Kohli was seen completely unhappy with the decision-making of Gouch and fumed around the park before engaging in a brief discussion with the on-field umpires and trudged off the field. The cameras did spot him chirping in agitation and nodding his head even when seated in the dressing room, a couple of balls after the incident.
