‌Men’s Hundred | Twitter reacts to Old Trafford’s pitiful ovation as injury leaves Stokes agonizingly tormented

Setbacks are a part and parcel of life but recurring injuries can be mentally and physically devastating for any individual. Ben Stokes underwent a similar tragedy as a hamstring injury compelled him to leave the field during Northern Supercharger’s encounter against Manchester Originals.

Deciding to field first under batting haven conditions of Old Trafford turned costly as Phil Salt’s blitzkrieg led the Originals to a powerplay score of 73. Although the middle order failed to capitalize on the rollicking start, a few lusty blows from the lower middle order propelled them to 152 in 100 balls. In return, Matthew Short fell early to Fazalhaq Farooqis's new ball mastery before his opening ally, Stokes was forced to leave the field due to a recurring injury.

On the twelfth ball of the second innings, Tom Aspinwall bowled a full-pitched outswinger outside the stumps that Ollie Robinson intended to shuffle across the line and ramp. However, he failed to get the bat and the white rock deflected off the gloves towards the right of the wicketkeeper. While the pair tried to hurry for a couple of runs, Phil Salt made a direct hit at the striker’s end but an unprecedented action took place on the opposite end.

Stokes was seen hobbling at the edge of the popping crease in an attempt to complete the second run. He threw the helmet in disgust and lay down in the ground holding his left hamstring before a couple of support staff roped into the ground to assist him. Eventually, the Durham all-rounder was carried off the field retired hurt with the Old Trafford crowd giving him a standing ovation. The English red-ball skipper was seen in agony as he aimed to skip the T20 World Cup 2024 earlier, to be fully available for England’s Test assignments as a pure all-rounder. The Twitterverse felt pity for Stokes, leaving the social media into a frenzy.
