The United States of America stood at the brink of pulling off a second shock victory on the trot, in New York on Wednesday, after a valiant batting effort set India a stiff target of 111. However, the Men in Blue were still the runaway favourites, until a shocking turn of events at the start of the run chase firmly put the hosts in the driver's seat and sent shockwaves around the cricket world.
Virat Kohli reassumed the role of opener alongside Rohit Sharma and was handed the strike on the second ball of the innings after the skipper rotated strike on the first delivery. Up against the world-beater was Saurabh Netravalkar, a former Mumbai cricketer who recently rose to fame with his Super Over antics against Pakistan. The left-arm quick began (and ended) the enticing battle with an absolute jaffa, pitching a good length delivery on fourth stump that angled away from the batter just enough to nick the outside edge en route to the wicket-keeper's gloves. Kohli had no option but to trot back to the pavilion while Rohit at the other end whistled in appreciation at the sheer quality of the delivery.
It was the first ever duck for Kohli in a T20 World Cup, dramatically bringing down his 150-plus average during run chases in the tournament, and left Twitterati scrambling for words.
