WPL 2024 | Twitter reacts as RCB choke golden chance by letting Lanning zigzag her way to safety

With their men's counterparts having no trophies to show in the 16 years of shared existence, RCB and DC took the field on Sunday hoping to break the franchise drought. However, the former took little time to channel their IPL predecessors as they squandered an opportunity in the first over itself.

‌Delhi Capitals began the WPL final in the same way they had operated through the tournament with Meg Lanning and Shafali Varma once again setting the tone through an exemplary powerplay performance. The duo combined for 61 runs across the first six overs as the latter characteristically played the aggressor but the Royal Challengers Bangalore did have the golden opportunity to nip the thriving partnership in the bud, only to let it slip on the big occasion.

On the second ball of the innings, Lanning opened the face of her bat to guide Renuka Singh's wide delivery down to short-third and called for a single. Shafali obliged by sprinting down the deck only to realize her skipper was stuck a couple of yards outside the crease ball watching and by the time the Australian screamed no, the Indian had already made her way to the other end. Lanning initially turned around to get herself to safety but realized in time the mistake was hers and instead made another U-turn to begin the long run towards the bowler's end. However, to her incredible fortune, Shreyanka Patil after fielding the ball had ended up in a kneeled position and lamely looped the ball towards Renuka, who was stood midway through the pitch. By the time the ball ballooned to the pacer and she turned around to rifle the Kookaburra at the stumps, Lanning had put forth a sprawling dive to miraculously escape scot-free from a doomed situation.

Twitterati, unsurprisingly, could not help but lament RCB's streak of letting things slip in clutch moments.
