IPL 2024 | Twitter and Dhoni laud flying Pathirana’s one-handed screamer denying Warner’s assault

Sometimes a great catch can change the course of the game but at times a catch can defy the laws of physics and belief. Such was the scene in the clash between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals, when Matheesha Pathirana displayed unparalleled athleticism to send David Warner back to the hut.

Opting to bat first, the Delhi Capitals made a blazing start with openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw propelling them to 62/0 by the end of the powerplay. Warner reached his fifty in just 31 deliveries, guiding Delhi to 91/0 after nine overs and Shaw joined the party late. The Chennai bowling attack sought desperately to break this partnership, prompting MS Dhoni to reintroduce Mustafizur Rahman for his second over, which bolstered their bowling, much to the crowd's delight, which witnessed some outstanding fielding displays.

On the 10th over's third ball, the Bangla pacer delivered a slower, fuller ball that tempted Warner to attempt a reverse-lap shot. As the ball left Mustafizur's hand, Warner swiftly switched his stance and made solid contact. However, Pathirana, stationed at short third man, was alert to the situation, extending his right hand and diving to his right with a huge leap. His athletic dive paid off as he managed to snatch the ball with his fingertips and maintain the body's poise, leaving Warner stunned. The packed Vishakapatnam crowd erupted in applause at Pathirana's remarkable effort, with even Dhoni acknowledging the young Sri Lankan's talent with a smile and clap.

Twitter users were left amazed by Pathirana's exceptional catch, sparking discussions across social media platforms.
