A whooping 19 wickets fell on the second day of the ongoing first Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka with the latter collapsing for a paltry 42 runs. Marco Jansen’s seven-fer and Temba Bavuma’s gritty 71 was the highlight of the second day as the Proteas lead by 281 runs at Kingsmead, Durban.

Resuming the day from 80/4, the South African lower order was on the receiving end of brutal bowling from the visitors with Kyle Vereyanne falling early. Marco Jansen nurdled for a while before falling and Bavuma was left stranded with the tail. The Proteas captain executed some eye-catching strokes to reach to complete a fifty despite wickets falling from the other end. Eventually, Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada added brisk contributions along with Bavuma’s 71 to propel the hosts to 191 runs total.

In reply, Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen spit venom with the new ball as the visitors struggled to accumulate runs. Following the dismissals of Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, and Angelo Mathews, a 16-run stand followed before Gerald Coetzee removed Kamindu Mendis in the eleventh over. Following this, the Lions lost half of their remaining wickets in just 19 balls to see a record-low collapse for just 42 runs.

Carrying a lead of 149 runs, South African openers Tony de Zorzi and Aiden Markram started off well against the Lankan pacers before the spinners came into the fray. With the opening partnership nearing fifty, de Zorzi tried to sweep Prabath Jayasuriya and got dismissed in the process. Subsequently, Wiaan Mulder added 30 runs with Markram before the two departed in quick time leaving Bavuma and Stubbs to pile up runs on the board. South Africa surpassed the hundred-run mark with almost an hour of play left, light permitted. With the Lankans trying their best to capitalise on the extended thirty minutes of play, Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs withstood them with a defensive mindset as South Africa end the day with 281 runs lead and seven wickets in hand.
