Departure of Ed Woodward could make the difference for Erik Ten Hag, claims Louis Van Gaal

Netherlands manager and former Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal has asserted that Ed Woodward's departure from the English club may benefit Erik ten Hag in his mission to be successful at Old Trafford. Van Gaal had suggested earlier this year that Ten Hag should reject the move to United.

Manchester United are set to sail on course for new beginnings ahead of the 2022-23 campaign after the appointment of Erik Ten Hag. The English side conducted a thorough and extensive hiring process before making the final decision to hire the former Ajax manager. The Manchester club endured a terrible campaign last season as they fell well short of expectations and finished in a Europa League spot.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick, and Ralf Rangnick took charge of the club at several junctures of the season but were unable to arrest their slump. Ten Hag has already taken charge of the Manchester club as he looks to initiate a major systematic and tactical overhaul of the club in order to restore the Premier League side to the top of the pyramid in English football. United had made some severe backroom changes with long-term chief executive Edward Woodward relieved from his duties and Richard Arnold succeeding him.

Former United manager Louis Van Gaal who had called for Ten Hag to reject the overtures from the club if they came calling has claimed that the United manager could succeed due to the departure of Woodward.

“There is now a new leadership. It was Woodward and now it is Richard Arnold and that can make the difference. So we have to wait and see. He (Ten Hag) has a lot of confidence. So who am I to say something about that?” Van Gaal told Sky Sports.

Van Gaal also commented on Netherlands international Jurrien Timber’s transfer links to United.

"I think a player of his quality can play in the Premier League. If he has to make this big step now, that's the question. (If he does not play) then he is not so wise, I think. He has to play,” he added.
