Luck favoured high-flying Hobart Hurricanes as they fielded first in the main event of the ensuing Big Bash League. After a two-run first over, the openers gathered 40 runs in the powerplay. Warner and Sangha smacked the opposition bowlers left, right, and centre as they reached 97 runs halfway through the innings. Just when they were reaching the fifty, Nathan Ellis struck on back-to-back deliveries before Sangha reached his fifty. However, the middle order scored twenties and added enough to push them to 146/4 in 16 overs. However, the Hurricanes were brilliant in the slog overs to curb them to 182 runs in 20 overs with Nathan Ellis bagging a three-fer without conceding a boundary in his full overs quota.
In response, Mitchell Owen offered a flying start to the Canes, smashing the pacers all around the park. Caleb Jewell was playing smart by offering him the strike and Owen went all guns blazing against the pacers. They reached 74 runs in the powerplay with Owen already surpassing the fifty. The assault continued as the Canes reached the century mark in the seventh over. While Chris Green kept things a tad tight, Tanveer Sangha came in and outwitted Jewell for run-a-ball 13. Nikhil Chaudhary followed suit before owen raced to a 39-ball century, the fastest in BBL history. They were 138/2 midway through the chase, needing 45 runs in the last ten balls. While Tom Andrews got him for 108, Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade played some rash strokes to bring up a cameo and see them through with 35 balls left.
