Kamal to lead India in Asian table tennis championships

Achanta Sharath Kamal will lead a 10-member Indian squad at the Asian Table Tennis Championships to be held in Pattaya, Thailand, from September 26 to October 3.

National champion Soumyajit Ghosh, Harmeet Desai, Sanil Shetty and G Sathiyan are the other members on the men’s team, while Mouma Das, Ankita Das, Pooja Sahasrabudhe, K Shamini and Manika Batra form the women's team.

The competition will mark world number 52 Kamal’s return to competitive table tennis after pulling out of the pre-quarterfinals at the World Championships in China in April with a side strain.

Indian paddlers will compete in both team and individual events. They were quarterfinalists in the team competition in the previous edition in Macau.

The touenament has been accorded World Championships qualification event status by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), making it an important event in the Asian TT calendar. The World Championships are scheduled to be held in Malaysia in February 2016.
