BBL | Rain plays spoilsport in Sydney to abandon encounter between high flying Thunder and Hurricanes
A three-way tie emerged at the top of the table in the Big Bash League on Wednesday after the clash between Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes was abandoned without a ball being bowled. Both teams are on nine points along with the Sydney Sixers, albeit the Thunder have played an extra game.
Sydney's ambitious plan of holding the first ever carbon-neutral game in the Big Bash League were washed away by incessant showers at the ENGIE Stadium. The rain began well before the encounter was slated to begin, causing the toss to be delayed well in advance, and it continued pouring practically non-stop for the next hour and a half. When the radar showed more strong showers approaching, the umpires were left with no choice but to call off the game at 8:30 PM local time.
The result puts an end to the four match-winning streak for the Hobart Hurricanes following their loss in the season opener against the Melbourne Renegades. Sydney Thunder, meanwhile, have also won four games and sit higher in the table with a net run rate of 0.166 but having played a game more than their rivals. However, the no-contest means neither team was able to dislodge the Sydney Sixers from their perch as anticipated, who continue to sit in first with nine points and a net run rate of 0.228 from six games.
Fortunately for fans, there is no such inclement weather predicted in Hobart on Friday, where the teams are slated to meet for the reverse encounter.
And that's it!
The bat flip for Thunder v Hurricanes has unfortunately been delayed at ENGIE Stadium.
