The Tour de France 2025 Betting Preview

tdfheadernew

The world’s greatest bicycle race gets underway for its 112th edition on Saturday 5th July. Three weeks, 21 stages, and 3,320 km later the world’s best riders will arrive in Paris for the Tour de France’s iconic conclusion along the Champs-Élysées. Since its first edition in 1903, riders have competed for the iconic Yellow Jersey, or Maillot Jaune, the crowning glory of all professional cycling and the contest for the 2025 edition is sure to be unmissable.

Spreadex has a number of fixed odds markets for the Tour, including outright markets for every major jersey, including the Yellow Jersey, and markets for the winner of every stage of the race.

What is the Tour de France?

The Tour is the oldest and most prestigious of cycling’s three grand tours, and completing it is widely considered one of the toughest tests in professional cycling. The race is a gruelling three-week-long event, featuring 21 stages and two rest days. Every stage is an individual race but the ultimate prize, the Yellow Jersey, is awarded to the rider with the quickest overall elapsed time for the entire tour.

Riders also compete for the Polka Dot Jersey, Green Jersey, and White Jersey, with each jersey being awarded for different skills. The Polka Dot Jersey goes to the so-called “King of the Mountains”, the best climber in the race. The Green Jersey is also known as the points jersey and requires riders to race at intermediate checkpoints throughout each stage. It often goes to a strong sprinter. The White Jersey is for the best young rider (under 25). There is also a team prize for the team with the quickest total elapsed time. Along with the overall prizes, riders also covet individual stage wins. Each stage is a prestigious race unto itself but also comes with a share of the huge €2.5m prize pot (for the 2025 edition).

This year’s Tour:

This year’s Tour gets underway in Lille for stage one, before wending its way through the French heartlands down to the Pyrenees, and then across the sheer mountainsides of the Alps. The so-called “Queen Stage” of the Tour will be stage 18’s brutal 171km race through the Alps, which requires riders to climb more than 5000 metres of French mountainside. The race culminates in Paris on Sunday 27th July with a sprint finish down the Champs-Élysées.

The Favourites:

Since 2020, the Tour has only been won by two different riders: Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard. The Slovenian Pogačar has been the dominant force in cycling for the last five years or so, even drawing comparison to great Eddy Merckx who won a record-equalling five Tours in his career. The Dane Vingegaard is more of a Tour de France specialist, and despite coming second to Pogačar in the 2024 edition, he has generally had the better of their rivalry in this race. Both riders enter the race with great expectation, with Pogačar the current favourite for the Yellow Jersey at 4/11, and Vingegaard trailing at 13/5.

Whilst the two favourites will be tough to beat, there are plenty of others who could challenge. Double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel came 3rd in the 2024 edition and continues to improve as a grand tour rider. He sits at 14/1. Pro-Peloton stalwart Primož Roglič also has plenty of grand tour experience, having won both the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España during his career. He is currently 18/1 to claim his 1st Yellow Jersey. British hope lies primarily with Simon Yates who won the 2025 Giro d’Italia, but unfortunately rides for the same team as Vingegaard and will likely have more of a supporting role. His 80/1 makes him a long shot, but certainly doesn’t rule him out.

Other betting markets:

Competition for the other jerseys will also be intense, and with less clear favourites, the betting markets could be of some interest. Favourites for the Green Jersey include some of the peloton’s strongest sprinters, as well as some great all-round riders. Tour debutant Jonathan Milan is the current favourite at 2/1, with speedsters Jasper Philipsen and Tim Merlier just behind at 16/5 and 9/2 respectively. Veterans Mathieu van der Poel and Wout Van Aert are also among the shortest odds at 5/1 and 6/1 respectively.

The Polka Dot jersey is often closely tied to the Yellow Jersey, with strong climbers typically competing for both. Given this, Pogačar and Vingegaard also open as favourites for the “King of the Mountains” jersey at 11/8 and 6/1 respectively. However, other more “pure” climbers like Lenny Martinez and Felix Gall aren’t far behind at 10/1 and 16/1 respectively.

Remco Evenepoel is the favourite to win the White Jersey, currently sitting at 6/11 to reclaim the jersey which he won in 2024. Team Visma - Lease a Bike are even money to claim the team prize, with UAE Team Emirates just behind at 5/4.
