The Test match between England and New Zealand saw twists and turns from the first day of the game and both teams were equally poised after the first innings. However, it was England who managed to win the Test match after a herculean effort from Joe Root helped them cross the finish line.

England defeated New Zealand by five wickets in the first Test match of the series at Lord’s. The game was one of the most interesting Test matches in a long time as both sides had the chance to win the game after the first innings. Kane Williamson’s men batted well to post a target of 277 for England in the final innings.

At one stage it seemed like the New Zealand bowlers would rip through the English batting line-up and win the game for them. However, it was Joe Root who stood tall and scored a brilliant hundred to make sure his team won the game. New Zealand skipper lauded Root for his top knock and during the post-match presentation said, "It was a fantastic game of cricket which took an incredible inning from an amazing player to get them across the line. It’s truly an unbelievable achievement, recognising the quality of the player and also his longevity".

The second Test match will be played at Nottingham between the two teams and Kane Williamson and his side will be hoping to make a strong comeback in that game.
